KEPT SHOWING UP

Persistence, measured — nine seasons of resurfacing, fifteen seasons of professional baseball, the only man to homer in his first at-bat on two continents, 391 games played for 106 chances, and six more years on three continents after being written off.

The five stories

Previews below. The full stories publish on this page at release.

Chapter 1 · Ryan Thompson

The “other name” in the David Cone trade — Jeff Kent was the famous one. Thompson kept resurfacing for nine seasons anyway; his son became an NBA player.

Chapter 2 · Kevin Roberson

Among all hitters who batted under .200 for their careers, nobody homered more often. Fifty-one RBI on sixty-one hits, across fifteen professional seasons.

Chapter 3 · Jon Nunnally

The only player ever to homer in his first at-bat in both the majors and Japan. He reinvented himself from catcher to outfielder to get there, then became a major-league hitting coach.

Chapter 4 · Greg Hansell

391 games across the minors, Japan, and Mexico, for 106 major-league appearances spread over sixteen seasons.

Chapter 5 · José Malavé

A top-100 prospect whose major-league window was 45 games. He played six more years across Japan, Mexico, Italy, Korea, and independent ball rather than go home.
